One Month

Sean was officially one month old yesterday – wow how time flies. We celebrated by taking him to the Dr for a checkup. The little guy is still somewhat yellow so our primary Doctor sent us for a second opinion. We did that and both Doctors agree that this is normal and nothing to worry about. They called it “breast milk jaundice” and said it could possibly take another one or two weeks to clear up. There is a substance in mother’s milk that inhibits uridine diphosphoglucuronic acid (UDPGA) glucuronyl transferase. Impressed?

Sean has been changing daily. Just in the past few days he has developed an ability to track voices and objects. He also seems to study your face a lot more when you hold him. When he is on his play mat he will actually reach out and hit one of the toys dangling in front of his face. His sleeping habits are also changing a little – for the better. Hopefully there is rest in Tracy’s future. He is also getting his daily “tummy time” and is trying like hell to raise his head up. It’s amazing to see all the progress.

We are having some friends over tonight for dinner. This is an attempt to get life back to normal. We will see how it goes. Hopefully nobody gets pooped on.

Grandpa Dale Visit

My Dad was in town for a nice long weekend. He just went home yesterday. It was actually the first time he had come to see us in NY from both times we have lived here. We were very happy to have him. I think NY actually felt like the tropics to him after suffering through an Iowa winter.

I think it is safe to say that he enjoyed Sean (and vice versa). If we were having trouble getting Sean to sleep we just hand him off the Grandpa and he would be out in a few minutes. I think Grandpa set a couple new records for sleeping at one time – 3 hours plus.

We treated Grandpa to a very boring weekend – hardly leaving the house. This was fine with him as he got to hang out with Sean. On Sunday we did make a nice drive up to a couple of the lakes, toured the Cornell campus in Ithaca and then had lunch (unsuccessfully trying to blend in with the college kids).

As you can see we took the obligatory Drake outfit pictures. I worry that we are confusing Sean and he needs to be an Iowa Hawkeye at heart. I guess we will have a chance to test the nature vs. nurture theory.

We now have some time to ourselves. We are trying hard to get Sean into some routines so poor momma can sleep once in a while.
